New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker has been in the news recently for heroically rescuing his neighbor from an engulfing fire in her house. Founded in 2003, its mission is to improve quality of life for Newark residents by equipping them with needed tools and skills to better the community. The charity runs several initiatives to further this goal. Twelve Family Success Centers make up the Family Success Center Network, which helps troubled families access available resources. Mayor Booker’s charity has gained noteworthy attention from national talk show hosts. After the mayor’s enduring feud with Conan O’Brian, who consistently makes fun of Newark on his show, the host donated a large check to the charity, then offered to donate $500 for every future joke. Oprah Winfrey gave $1.5 million to various New Jersey organizations, many chosen based on information provided by Newark Now.
