Blogger and self-proclaimed techie, Jenna Giarletta, examines how modern advances are helping the green cause.
Technology for the Greater Good: Pinterest
When I first heard of Pinterest, it didn’t really appeal to me. Twitter drew me in because it’s text based. I’m no photographer, which is also why I never bothered to make a Tumblr. If I’m just going to wind up regurgitating media from other profiles, why bother? I don’t even retweet much on Twitter, except if there’s valuable information like a link or news announcement. But since I’m always curious about new social networks, I decided to at least make an account. Then maybe try uploading a pin or two.
Several boards later I find myself surfing the web for cool clothes to pin, and thinking of other ways to get creative with updates. At first, I didn’t understand why I’d want to showcase my interests through a bunch of jumbled pictures. Now it makes sense. The images, pinned with links and brief captions, tell the world everything you like. And that is a form of self-expression.
Despite what you might’ve heard, Pinterest isn’t only for planning a wedding or decorating a room. You can literally post anything you want to share. True, clothes are a common pin subject. I’m not obsessed with fashion, but it’s fun to post items I find while browsing my favorite brand websites…and seeing what gets the most attention. I recently pinned a jacket that got 14 repins and 10 likes, but some of my pins didn’t get anything. If you’re not into fashion, there are tons of other different subjects to pin. I’ve discovered it’s a cool way to share television and other media reviews, your favorite items, or random pictures of your surroundings that turned out great.
The website is still in beta mode too, which means there aren’t boards with millions of followers and pins…yet. Don’t let the “request an invite” button throw you off though, since I received mine fairly quickly. Start your Pinterest experience with these eight eco-friendly pinboards!
