The House is preparing to pass the Republican budget, proposed by Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), that would slash funding for Head Start.  Head Start is a federally funded program that provides a wide range of services to a million young children living in poverty and their families.  Across the board, research has shown the importance of early education and how children in poverty who are denied access are set up to be perpetually disadvantaged.  According to analysis by the National Education Association, the plan would eliminate slots for about 200,000 children in 2014. Over the next decade, the NEA estimates, more than two million children would lose opportunities to attend Head Start centers as a result of the cuts.
