Tropical rainforests added to endangered world heritage sites
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added tropical rainforests in Honduras and Indonesia to its list of endangered world heritage sites. In Honduras’ Caribbean coast, the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve is back on the endangered list after only coming off it in 2007. Within the 5,000 square kilometer (1,9000 square miles) mountainous reserve conservation efforts have faced problems with illegal land clearing, hunting and fishing. Three nature reserves that comprise most of Sumatra’s remaining rainforest were also added to the list. UNESCO says these sites face intense pressure from logging, road building, poaching and other illegal activities.
